Exit Signs

  • Exit signs shall be illuminated at all times including during power failures.
  • Generally the exit lights shall have a battery back up to maintain illumination.
  • Monthly testing and documentation is required by the property owner/tenant.

Emergency Lights

  • Emergency lighting is required to illuminate exit paths during a power failure.
  • All emergency lights shall be tested once a month for 30 seconds and once a year for 90 minutes.

Exits

  • All exits are to be kept clear of obstructions at all times, aisles or corridors shall be kept clear for its full width.
  • All exit doors are to remain unlocked while building is occupied.
  • All exit doors shall be free of deadbolts, slidebolts and padlocks. Only one locking mechanism is permitted per door.

Emergency & Exit Lighting Inspections


In an actual emergency, many injuries occur due to panic as a result of insufficient lighting and exits that are not clearly marked. Protect your clients and employees with quality Exit Signs and Emergency Lights.

Routine maintenance of emergency and exit lighting is frequently overlooked until an emergency occurs. Regular maintenance is required by NFPA Standard No. 101, chapter 31, section 1.3.7.

 

NFPA Standard No. 101-31-1.3.7

"A functional test shall be conducted on every required emergency lighting system at 30-day intervals for a minimum of 30 seconds. An annual test shall be conducted for the 1 1/2 hour duration. Equipment shall be fully operational for the duration of the test. Written records of visual inspections and tests shall be kept by the owner for inspection by the authority having jurisdiction."

Our factory trained technicians will perform the required testing and maintenance on emergency lights and provide you with the written records as required by law. A full discharge of each unit must be performed annually.

Testing Procedures for Emergency Lights

• 90 Minute full function test
• Disconnect AC power supply to each emergency light
• Check battery and lens for sulfation
• Clean each emergency light and lens as required
• Adjust beam for proper alignment
• Place testing label on the emergency light and record in testing log
• Troubleshooting/repair may also include

• Check and adjust charging system voltage
• Check battery output voltage
• Check line voltage to remote fixtures

An annual test shall be conducted on every required battery-powered emergency lighting system for not less than 11/2 hours. Equipment shall be fully operational for the duration of the test.

Exit signs connected to or provided with a battery-operated emergency illumination source, where required in 7.10.4, shall be tested and maintained in accordance with 7.9.3.

Regulatory Requirements:

OSHA Code of Federal Regulation

  • Requires adequate and reliable illumination for all exits

  • Requires proper maintenance to ensure that exit lighting is in continuously proper operating condition

NFPA 70 — National Electric Code

  • Requires specific illumination and performance of emergency and exit lights

  • Provides functional standards for battery-powered emergency and exit lighting

NFPA 101 — Life Safety Code

  • Requires a monthly inspection of all emergency and exit lighting systems

  • Requires an annual test of all emergency and exit lighting systems

Recordkeeping

Codes require that written records of visual inspections and tests shall be kept by the owner for inspection by the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ). Smiths Fire will maintain a copy of the for all exit and emergency lights in our facility, type of fixture, battery type, and location in facility, and maintenance dates. An inspection label will also be placed on the unit by Smiths Fire to document the annual test and maintenance.
